Astronergy's Bulgarian subsidiary has finalized a strategic agreement with Greece's largest utility company, Public Power Corporation (PPC) Group, for the full acquisition of the Vedrare 87.9MWdc solar photovoltaic project. Under the terms of the deal, Astronergy will serve as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor responsible for project delivery. This partnership represents a significant expansion of Astronergy's international renewable energy portfolio while providing substantial momentum for Bulgaria's energy transition strategy.

The Vedrare project is strategically located in the town of Karlovo within Plovdiv Province in central Bulgaria, approximately 150 kilometers from the capital Sofia. As one of Bulgaria's largest single-site solar installations, the facility is projected to generate 140 million kilowatt-hours annually, delivering reliable, clean electricity to local communities and the Bulgarian national grid. The project is expected to substantially reduce carbon emissions and contribute meaningfully to Bulgaria's carbon neutrality objectives.

Astronergy commenced project development in 2023, completing the development phase over more than a year, with construction now underway. The project utilizes Astronergy's proprietary solar modules and core equipment to ensure optimal operational efficiency and long-term reliability. Beyond the primary power plant construction, Astronergy will also oversee transmission line installation and substation expansion projects, delivering a comprehensive turnkey solution spanning development, construction, and grid interconnection.

The successful advancement of the Vedrare project establishes a new benchmark for green energy development in Bulgaria while providing a replicable success model for renewable energy project development and investment across Central and Eastern Europe.

According to Astronergy Bulgaria's country manager: "The successful execution of the Vedrare project represents not only a pivotal achievement in Astronergy's internationalization strategy but also provides robust support for Bulgaria's energy mix optimization and carbon neutrality trajectory. Through our end-to-end involvement, we have not only mitigated asset handover risks for our partners but also deepened our collaborative relationship with premier international partners like PPC Group, establishing a solid foundation for expanded future cooperation."

This collaboration with PPC Group further demonstrates Astronergy's competitive positioning and brand influence in international markets. As a leading global provider of green energy solutions, Astronergy will continue leveraging technological innovation and integrated supply chain advantages to advance global renewable energy development, contributing to the construction of a sustainable, low-carbon future.

Bulgaria's Solar Surge Accelerates Toward 6GW Milestone

Bulgaria's large-scale photovoltaic project construction is rapidly accelerating. Based on current development trajectories, the country's total installed solar capacity is projected to reach 6 gigawatts by mid-next year, with no signs of this expansion trend slowing.

Investors in Bulgaria's major solar installations appear undeterred by zero and negative wholesale electricity prices affecting their revenue streams. A critical factor enabling this confidence is the surge in battery energy storage system (BESS) deployments, which effectively bridge the gap between peak daytime generation and electricity demand profiles.

Capital.bg estimates in a recent analysis that the country's photovoltaic capacity will increase by 1.5 gigawatts in the first half of next year from large-scale projects alone, bringing total solar capacity to 6 gigawatts. The report identifies 14 projects, several of which benefit from BESS grants provided through Bulgaria's previous tender processes.

Among the numerous projects, developments by Chinese conglomerates have attracted particular attention. Currently, the largest photovoltaic project is the Simeonovgrad-Polyanovo Solar Park, comprising two units with a combined 250MW capacity located in the Haskovo region in southern Bulgaria. United Energy Group acquired both projects last year, marking China's first major investment in Bulgaria, with the solar facility expected to commence operations in early next year.

Construction of the Tenevo hybrid power plant is also progressing steadily. Approximately two years ago, Eurowind Energy and Renalfa IPP initiated construction of the solar component of this hybrid facility near Yambol. The photovoltaic park is designed for 237.6MW peak capacity with 213.7MW grid-connected capacity.

Bulgaria's largest solar installation is named Apriltsi. Additionally, Czech company Rezolv Energy acquired the 229MW Saint George project two years ago, breaking ground last autumn. According to latest data, the project represents an investment of nearly 1 billion Bulgarian lev (approximately €511 million), with operations expected to commence by year-end and the developer securing 199MW of grid connection capacity.
