Tesla's Shanghai Megapack Factory Goes Live: 40GWh Annual Capacity to Serve Global Markets

Tesla officially announced that its Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory commenced operations in Lingang(临港) on February 11, marking a significant milestone with the rollout of its first Megapack, Tesla's utility-scale energy storage system. This development signals a new phase in Tesla's China operations.

The Megapack is Tesla's ace product in its energy storage business. It's like a combination of a giant power bank and a smart energy manager. A single Megapack can store more than 3,900 kWh of electricity, equivalent to the battery capacity of 65 Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive vehicles.

The facility's construction, which began on May 23, 2024, was completed and passed inspection on December 26 of the same year - setting a new "Tesla speed" record with just seven months from groundbreaking to completion. Mass production is scheduled to begin in early 2025.

The Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory spans approximately 200,000 square meters and is designed to produce 10,000 Megapack commercial energy storage units annually, with a total storage capacity of nearly 40GWh for global markets. The Megapack system offers robust energy storage capabilities, providing grid stability and blackout prevention without requiring natural gas peaker plants.
