Quantum Materials Corp. Achieves 99.5% Quantum Efficiency with Pure Red Quantum Dots; Surpasses 1000

American Quantum Dot producer Quantum Materials Corp of San Marcus, Texas reported that it achieved 99.5% quantum yield efficiency for its pure red (630 nm emission peak) cadmium-free ?quantum dots. The company also reported that its cadmium-free quantum dots reached 1000 hours of continuously-on operation in a remote LED application.

Quantum Materials Corp says that its pure red (630nm) cadmium-free quantum dots provide the highest photon conversion efficiency in the industry. The company says its pure red quantum dots are even more efficient than quantum dots made with cadmium, a material known for its toxicity. The company fabricated the pure red Cd-free quantum dots using its proprietary continuous-flow manufacturing method.
 
According to the company, its continuous-flow process ensures high uniformity throughout the high-volume production. Notably, OLED displays have greater contrast ratio and overall color gamut than LCD. OLED screens are emissive and individual pixel acts as its own light source. OLED displays are unlike LCD technology, which is transmissive and employs backlighting.
 
Because OLEDs are thin and OLED displays do not require backlighting, they offer significant improvements in power efficiency and allow thinner displays. Also, because they don’t need a backlight, they can theoretically respond as much as 100 times faster than modern LCD screens with a 0.01 millisecond response time compared to 1 millisecond for modern LCD screens.
 
According to the company, a true QD-LED display could be even more impressive than an oled display with up to 1000 pixels per inch resolution. The company says that quantum dots can be easily integrated into the existing photo resist film layer and it is working with expert partners in producing photo resist films.
 
“Our primary focus is on driving cadmium-free quantum dots as a phosphor replacement in OLED displays, in concordance with Apple’s recent announcement regarding their integration of quantum dot and OLED technologies into QD-LED for future iPhone displays. Our materials are the foundation for accelerating development of QD-LED displays and making them a reality for mobile devices,” said Toshi Ando, Quantum Materials Corp VP of marketing.
 
Ando added, “QD-LED display form factors are more desirable for mobile devices and quantum dots as a phosphor replacement will radically improve color performance and energy efficiency over current OLED technology.”
 
“This achievement is even more significant when you consider the fact that it is being accomplished in a high volume production environment and is not simply a small one-off batch science experiment requiring days of post processing. Our process is quickly scalable to industrial-volume production at a price point commercially viable for next-gen QD-LED display development efforts such as Apple’s,” concluded Quantum Materials’ President and CEO Stephen Squires.
 
Quantum Materials Corp. Sees No Performance Degradation at 1000-Hours of Operation
 
For the continuous operation, the QD-LEDs were under constant power of 2.5 Volts DC at 70mA. According to Quantum Materials, they were measured initially, incrementally and at 1000-hour mark, and showed no measurable degradation of intensity, peak emission or FWHM, which is the measurement for color purity. The company plans to continue the testing, taking power and measurements of essential performance criteria taken through 3000 hours and beyond.
